The Orang Utan Coffee Project: Coffee That Protects the Rainforest
Only around 14,000 wild orangutans remain in Sumatra – and their habitat continues to shrink with every hectare of rainforest that is cleared. This is exactly where the Orang Utan Coffee Project comes in: more than 350 smallholder farmers in the Gayo Highlands grow their coffee organically certified and without slash-and-burn farming. For every kilogram of green coffee exported, 50 cents go directly to the farming families to support environmentally responsible cultivation methods, while another 50 cents go to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) run by PanEco and YEL. This means that every cup of SUMATRA Orang Utan Coffee makes a small contribution to species conservation, rainforest protection and fair incomes for local farming families.
You can read how the project started, who is behind it and what has actually changed for farming families and orangutans in our blog article about the Orang Utan Coffee Project.
The Kudambo Project: Coffee That Supports Better Healthcare
In Zalewa, a rural community in southern Malawi, basic medical care is lacking – the nearest hospital is a two-hour walk away. This is why Swiss-Malawian couple Aline and Francisco Yakobe are building the Kudambo Medical Center: a facility designed to provide affordable, holistic healthcare for the region by 2030. Patients will be able to pay not only with cash, but also with agricultural produce or livestock – while a solidarity fund will provide additional support in cases of hardship. For every one-kilogram bag of CREMOSO Social Coffee sold, we donate CHF 1 or EUR 1 towards the development of the Medical Center.
You can read how the project started and how construction is progressing in our blog article about the Kudambo Project.
The Alem Brasil Project: Coffee That Gives Children a Future
In the favelas of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, thousands of children and young people grow up without reliable access to education, healthy food or safe care. The charitable organisation Alem Brasil works directly with these communities through breakfast programmes, football schools, educational courses and food assistance for families in need – funded by donations and sponsorships and supported by its partner organisation ALENA e.V. With our new BRAZILEÑA coffee, we donate CHF 0.20/EUR 0.20 for every kilogram sold directly to the project.
