Once upon a time there was a forest man - or "orang utan" - in the northern highlands of Sumatra. He was also called the gardener of the rainforest, because wherever he moved, he broke rotten branches from the canopy. When more sunlight reached the forest floor, the seeds of the fruits eaten by the orangutan germinated and flourished along its path.

Orang Utan Coffee Project

Today, the orangutan, so perfectly in tune with its habitat, is threatened with extinction. Merciless deforestation and devastating forest fires are destroying its habitat. Coffee farmers are also being robbed of their livelihoods in the tropical rainforests by the destruction of the tropical rainforests.

We do not want to and will not accept this. That is why we donate 0.50 € per kilogramme of exported green coffee to the Sumatra Orang Utan Protection Program SOCP of the Swiss foundation PanEco - and another 0.50 € to the small coffee farmers in the region. This enables them to comply with nature conservation guidelines, to refrain from deforestation and from hunting and trading with legally protected animals and plant species.

Tropical Mountains SUMATRA: Single Origin Coffee

For SUMATRA Orang Utan Coffee we only use green coffee from the Orang Utan Coffee Project. In this way, we support coffee farmers from our network or community by purchasing their gourmet coffee for the SUMATRA directly and without intermediaries. The coffee farmers we work with thus have a good and fair income.

The history of Tropical Mountains

The development of Tropical Mountains began in 2012 as a small farm 12 hours' drive from Lima, Peru. Peruvian Gisella Iriarte and Swiss Thomas Schwegler dream of organic and fair trade coffee - traceable from the bean in the tropical highlands to the fragrant cup at home.

Meanwhile, gourmet coffees from around the world have been added to our range, complementing the coffees from our family farm. They expand our ability to offer fair trade and certified organic coffees.

Respect makes the taste

And as Tropical Mountains evolves, we are relying on our roots: organic farming, direct fair trade and sustainable packaging. We are a member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), support local schools and fund charitable projects. Because we believe that respect is what makes coffee taste excellent. Respect for our employees, for the coffee plant and for nature as a whole. That's why we also offset the CO2 emissions from our value chain. Our family grows - our values remain.
